This course addresses the high school to college transition issues facing freshman students. Topics include social responsibility and relationship education, physical and mental health, and money management as well as other topics. This course represents a campus wide collaborative effort to provide students with stimulating current topics to enhance their personal and academic growth. Students will be active participants in the learning process through a dynamic curriculum responding to the needs of Marist students. Offered in the Spring Semester only.

This course will discuss the dangers of drugs, alcohol, and social relationships as well as the adverse effects to academic and athletic performance. This course will give factual statistics about college students and drugs, alcohol and sexual relationships. Also, applicable laws and punishments and the role of Marist Judicial Affairs will be presented.
Students will be exposed to the unique physical and mental challenges created by a college academic and social environment. Students will learn proper nutrition, exercise, and sleep habits that will significantly improve their academic performance and overall physical and mental health. Student will also be guided to departments on campus such as Health Services, Counseling Services and Campus Ministry for further assistance and information.
The different type of methods and financial aid for paying for college will be discussed including scholarships, grants and loans. Also, tips on planning, budgeting and saving money while in college will be given to students. Necessary versus unnecessary expenses and the dangers of debt and credit cards will also be discussed. Finally, students will learn where to search for both on and off campus jobs and how to balance academics with working.
Every student enrolled will attend an outside cultural or educational workshop and report to class on what was discussed and what they learned as well as their opinions on the topics. A schedule of events will be distributed at the beginning of the semester and updated throughout the semester for students to attend.
Students will learn about what Marist College is doing to keep the campus environmentally friendly. Also students will be asked to participate and develop new ways of keeping the campus clean and reducing waste. Students will also learn about global sustainability issues.
