FYS 101 Disability in Literature & Film

Disability studies as a field explores how ideas of physical and mental impairment emerge in law, culture, and society. This course will explore textual and cinematic representations of disability in such films as It’s a Wonderful Life, 300, and A Beautiful Mind and in literary works including medieval saints’ lives, Shakespeare’s Richard III, and in Alan Moore's/Dave Gibbon's graphic novel Watchmen. We will discuss these depictions of disability alongside questions of ethnicity, race, gender, and sexuality.
