FYS 101 Divine Bodies: The Spirituality of Physicality

This religious studies course explores connections between our physical bodies, our identities, and the groups to which we bond and belong.  We examine the body’s role in influencing religious understandings of humanity and the role of physicality in the construction of relationships and groups. In our explorations of these topics, we discuss a variety of concrete issues ranging from gender and sexuality to martial arts, communal prayer, and happiness. While this course focuses on examining religious rituals and philosophical texts, students in this class will also be invited to participate in physical forms of experiential learning, such as breath meditation, taichi, or other synchronic physical activities.
