FYS 101 L115 & L116 Muslims & Arabs Outside the Arab World

This course will explore the evolution of Muslim and Arab communities in Western democracies (Europe and the U.S.). Today, Muslims represent the largest religious minority in Western Europe and an important minority in the U.S. Most of them have arrived over the last several decades. How and why did Muslims and Arabs migrate to the West? How are these communities adapting to their new environment? Are Muslims in Europe different from those in the U.S.? What will be the future of Muslim communities in the West? As a part of this course, we will engage with various books and articles about Muslims in the West, and analyze how Muslims and Arabs are represented in one European and one American film.
