Rebecca Traister – Fall 2011 Honors Lecture
Rebecca Traister, whose coverage of the 2008 presidential election for Salon.com confirmed her to be a gifted cultural observer, discussed what the campaign meant for all of us, and what it meant for the upcoming presidential campaign in the Fall 2011 Honors Lecture on October 7, 2011. In this lecture, Traister discussed her first book, Big Girls Don’t Cry, which specifically addresses women in politics and how the media cover them. The lecture was followed with time for questions and answers, as well a book signing.
46th Annual Conference of the National Collegiate Honors Council – Phoenix, Arizona
Marist Honors students Lauren Hall, Sammi Vanderstok, and Allison Beres, and Director Lyn Lepre traveled to the American Southwest to explore and learn from the community of honors scholars who gathered there from across the country. Two students, Sammi and Allison, presented original research on interdisciplinary panels, while Lauren participated in a Poetry Master Class, culminating her experience with a final performance of spoken word poetry. Highlights also included a fascinating plenary session featuring R. Carlos Nakai, the world’s premier performing of the Native American flute, and the day-long “City as Text” offerings that allowed the students to explore the complex city of Phoenix.
2011 Fall Broadway Trip – How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying
One of the highlights of the 2011 Fall semester was the Broadway trip to see How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, starring Daniel Radcliffe and John Larroquette. Forty Honors students spent a culturally enriching Sunday afternoon in New York City enjoying this high-energy musical satire of corporate life and office politics.
