Office of Accommodations & Accessibility Awareness Week
On the first day of Disability Awareness Week, students, staff, and faculty learned about autism and Asperger syndrome while designing puzzle pieces that showed how they were unique. You can visit our office to see the puzzle displayed on our bulletin board for the month of October.
Visitors also participated in challenging simulation activities, signed disability awareness contracts as a promise to "disable the label", and played our celebrity matching game. All participants were entered into a raffle for some beautiful gifts from Mporium, and walked away with other goodies as well.
On Tuesday, the therapy dogs of Hudson Valley Positive Paws, a local chapter of Pet Partners, came to visit and taught us about how animals can help those with social, emotional, and physical disabilities. The immediate smiles and good vibes in the room were proof that these animals really do help ease stress and anxiety, simplifying life for a moment. For more information about the benefits of pet therapy, please visit https://petpartners.org/learn/.
Wednesday, faculty were invited to participate in a panel discussion with some of our staff and students. This was a great opportunity for faculty to get their questions answered in an intimate setting and learn more about our program, the services we provide, and the rights and responsibilities of college students with learning disabilities. Congratulations to the winner of our raffle for this event, Samantha Proffitt of First Year Programs! She walked away with a travel mug and red fox air fresheners from Mporium. If you were unable to attend, please see the attached packet that was given out, which includes useful information on the rights of students with disabilities, respectful disability language, and confidentiality do's and don'ts.
To wrap up disability awareness week on Thursday, our office held an Open House and invited the community to stop by to meet the staff, tour our expanded office, learn about disabilities and the services we provide, and of course, pick up more givaways! At the conclusion of our event, we drew two raffle winners who had attended one or more of our events throughout the week. Congratulations to Katy Silberger of the Marist Library and student, Meagan Carroll! They won some beautiful winter accessories from Mporium!
This year the Office of Accommodations and Accessibility will host the 24th Annual "Kids Day Out!", a developmental basketball clinic hosted by Accommodations and Accessibility and the members of the Red Foxes men's and women's basketball teams. The registration fee of $10 per participant benefits the Marist College Scholarship for Students With Disabilities. This event is designed for children ages 7 thru high school age. Beverages, snacks, and Kids' Day Out! t-shirts will be available for purchase. For further information please contact Linda Scorza in Accommodations and Accessibility at (845) 575-3274.
The Awareness Recognition Ceremony recognizes members of the Marist and local community for their efforts on behalf of individuals with disabilities both in service to them and in heightening campus and community awareness through their sensitivity. The recipients receive certificates and are recognized at a luncheon in their honor.
