A Message of Gratitude from Alexa Ritz'12

I hope that your Marist student is having a great year at Marist! As a graduating senior, it’s so hard for me to believe how quickly the years have gone by. I’ve been truly fortunate to benefit from Marist’s top-notch programs and the incredible faculty and staff members who have guided me throughout my education, which included two very valuable internships.
I had the amazing opportunity to intern at Albany Medical Center in the summer of 2010. I worked as a patient care associate in the Post–Anesthesia Care Unit. In this role I was called upon to assist nurses with patient care after surgery. As patients came out of the operating room, my job included taking vital signs, monitoring, and obtaining specimens for analysis. This internship was an amazing experience and confirmed my interest in medicine. It was also great for networking, as I have met many doctors, surgeons, and nurses in the hospital. My supervisor invited me to work whenever I was available, so I returned during the summer of 2011. These are the kinds of opportunities that can result from internships.
The Career Services department assisted me in securing an additional internship with Vassar Brothers Hospital in Poughkeepsie. I was able to do rotations in the many units in the hospital, giving me an idea of what each was like. This experience led me to realize my ultimate career goal, which is to work in the field of pediatrics. I am confident that my Marist education has prepared me to achieve my dream.
All of my professors at Marist have been exceptional; however, there is one in particular who will always stand out. Dr. Joseph Bettencourt guided me through my four years in the science program.
He’s everything that a student could ask for: a scholastic and career mentor, professor, internship coordinator, and most important, a friend. I am incredibly grateful to have benefited from his support and guidance.
Throughout my years at Marist I’ve also enjoyed participating in many clubs and activities such as the Dance Club, Math Team, Resident Hall Council, SEED (Students Encouraging Environmental Dedication), and Campus Ministry. All of these experiences would not have been possible without the generosity of those who have supported the Marist Fund.
I hope that you will consider supporting current Marist students by making a gift to the Marist Fund Parents Campaign today. Thank you.
