Financial Planning is a competitive, rapidly expanding profession. In the world of financial planning, those who choose to differentiate themselves seek the Certified Financial Planner® certification as the highest standard in the field.

Who should enroll:

  • Those who want to enter the expanding field of financial planning.
  • Professionals who presently counsel clients on the management of their finances, who want to bring their practice to a higher level and who seek the CFP® certification.
  • Those who want a greater understanding of financial planning for personal use.

Admissions:

The Financial Planning certificate is offered at the upper division (junior/senior) college level. Candidates are required to have 60 college credits, or over 3 years experience in financial planning. In addition, it is recommended that students have an educational or experiential background in the areas of finance, accounting and economics.

The Courses:

FP1: Fundamentals of Financial Planning This course is recommended to be taken first as it provides an overview of financial planning.

FP2: Insurance Planning This course familiarizes students with concepts of risk management and all forms of insurance, inclusive of Property & Casualty, Accident & Health, Life Insurance as well as medical and disability and long term care.

FP3: Investment Planning Students are taught the fundamentals of investing, including the mechanics of investing, assessing a clients risk tolerance level, tax situation, liquidity and marketability needs.

FP4: Income Tax Planning Students are taught to recognize income tax planning opportunities and dilemmas in personal financial planning. Topics include tax law, overview, terminology, and compensation.

FP5: Retirement and Employee Benefits This course provides working knowledge of retirement planning tools, terminology and techniques, including the rules, regulations and taxation of qualified and non-qualified plans, IRAs, on qualified deferred compensation, health insurance, disability and group insurance.

FP6: Estate Planning The fundamentals of the estate planning process as they relate to the broader context of financial planning are discussed.

Marist College does not certify individuals to use the CFP®, Certified Financial Planner® and certification marks. CFP® certification is granted only by the Certified Financial Planner® Board of Standards to those persons who, in addition to completing an educational requirement such as this CFP® Board Registered Program, have met its ethics, experience and examination requirements. CFP®, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® and CFP are certification marks owned by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. These marks are awarded to individuals who successfully complete the CFP® Board's initial and ongoing certification requirements.
