Marist Debate is committed to engaging the community of Marist with critical discourse. The Marist Debate team sponsors debates, public forums and discussions that are intended to spark discussion and further education. These public debates are intended to foster dialogue on controversial topics that face our communities. We are committed to the project that local democratic discussion can make our world a better place.
Marist Debate sponsors public debates on issues of importance to the Marist community and to the larger community. All of our debates and public forums are open to the public and we encourage community participation. Public debates are often centered around current affairs and issues at the campus, domestic and international levels.
We are also committed to opening up debate experiences for as many students as possible. Whether you wish to host or actively participate in a public debate, Marist Debate is here to help! We can assist with planning, publicizing and moderation of debate and speaking activities. Marist Debate also offers workshops for student govered organizations in organizing effective and successful debate and speaking events and persuasive campaigns on campus. Marist Debaters are actively involved in debate outreach both on and off campus. Debaters assist with organizing and planning of persuasive campaigns. This semester representatives from Marist Debate worked alongside campus organizations to help plan and craft their events and activities for maximum effectiveness. Marist Debate also reaches out to other academic extracurricular activites on campus to foster critical thinking between organizations and enhance the skills of their respective members.
The team also works with Urban Debate Leagues throughout the Northeast. Started in Atlanta as a way to help reduce traditional barriers for lesser-privileged students to debate, the UDL programs have swept through the nation. Marist debaters are often found working with local high school debate teams, coaching at New Jersey UDL tournaments and recruiting at UDL sponsored events.
