For Educators

The New York Media Experience Program offers a full-time semester of undergraduate study and internship in the greatest city in the world. The program is run by Marist College, a private four-year college located in Poughkeepsie, NY. Marist has operated a Communication Internship Program since the 1970s, successfully placing hundreds of students with New York City firms.

NYMEP is offered during Fall & Spring semesters only. We do NOT offer a Summer program.

The ideal candidate is a junior or senior who understands the competitive nature of media today and who brings an independent-minded, mature approach to his or her academic life.

The program does not accept post-graduates or graduate students.

The main focus of this experience is the internship. Selected undergraduates will receive personal attention in locating and securing an internship placement with a media company or organization. We deal directly with leading media companies, including all major networks and major cable channels, numerous top public relations firms, magazines and others. Our staff strongly believes in follow-up; each student's progress is monitored throughout the internship via both telephone and in-person visits to the internship site. A formal evaluation is collected from the internship supervisor at the end of the term.

Coursework is specifically designed to amplify the internship experience by focusing on ethical and management issues of concern to media professionals today. The online course offerings allow students maximum flexibility in adjusting work schedules.

Here is the credit/course breakdown:

Internship - 9 credits (minimum 4 days per week, 12+ weeks) Placement is handled on a personal basis, depending on each student's goals. Weekly journals and a reflection/analysis paper are required. Staff stay in touch with students via email and visit each site personally to meet with both student and work supervisor.

2 Courses - 3 credits each, taught in 8-week blocks. Students are required to take at least one course. Course offerings may vary by semester, but the focus remains on media studies and media issues. For updated course information, see Online Courses.

The cultural life of New York is an added value, to be sure. Our program begins with a two-day orientation program featuring a day of touring major attractions and introducing students to proper use of mass transit systems. Additionally, students are given several opportunities to choose to attend plays, lectures and other events. We strongly encourage them to take part in as many activities as possible while they are here. Students are housed at the 92nd St. Y, a renowned cultural center located in the safe, convenient upper east side of Manhattan.

We would be happy to answer any questions you may have.
