13CURRICULUMMaristCollegeispreparingtoimplementanewcurricu-lumorstudentsinterestedintheeldogamedesign.TenewmajorandminorprogramwillbeacollaborationbetweentheComputerScienceDepartmentandtheMediaArtsDepartmentbothowhichcurrentlyofertheirownconcentrationsthatwillcontinuetobeavailablealongsidethisnewmajorwhichisexpectedtobeo-eredinFall2015.TeprojectstartedwithmarketresearchdataromEduventurewhichsuggestedthereareopportunitiesintheareaogamesandemergingmedia.Fromthereittookmorethantwoyearsodevelopmentandinterdisciplin-aryconsultationtoormalizewhattheComputerScienceDepartmentandtheMediaArtsDepartmenthadalreadybeendoinginormallyor10yearssaidassociateproessorocomputerscienceRonColeman.AssistantproessoromediaartsKarenSchrierhashighhopesorthenewcur-riculumTemainreasonwecreatedthisdegreeistobetterservestudentsthatareinterestedinlearningaboutgames.Testudentsarereallyexcitedaboutthenewmajorbuttheyarestillabletojustconcentrateingamesinei-therComputerScienceorMediaStudiesandProductionitheywish.Coursesinthenewmajorwillin-cludeaoundationingamedesignanddevelopmentincludingintrotogamesbusinessogamesintroductiontoprogramminganddigitaltoolbox.StudentswillocusononeotwotrackseitherGameechnicalDevelopmentandProgrammingorGameDesignWritingandCulture.Tedevelopmentsideocusesoncomputationalthink-ingalgorithmsdatastructuresphysicsandmathematicalsimulationsasRonColemanexplained.Tedesignsideocusesonthegameplayandelementsothegamethewritingandnarrativeele-mentsgameproductionandthehistori-calculturalethicalandsocialaspectsogaming.Tenewconcentrationisverydi-erentromcurrentoferingsintheComputerScienceorMediaDesignmajors.Studentswillberequiredtotakecoursesacrossthebreadthoboththetechnicalandnon-technicalaspectsogamedesign.Alsostudentswillhavetoworkwithotherstudentswhomightnotberomtheirparticularareaoocuswhichisamodelotherealworldogameproduction.Tehopeisthatthismajorwillmimicthecollaborativepracticesintheeldtodaygivingstudentstheopportunitytoworktogethertocreategamesandothermediabutalsospecializeindevelopingspecicskillssuchasprogrammingdesignorproduction.AccordingtoColemanTisnewinterdisciplinarydegreewillhelpstudentsbemoreattrac-tivetoemployerssinceintheindustryeveryonehastoworkwithothersandinteamstobesuccessul.Gettingthatpracticeandurthermorehavingaport-oliotodemonstrateitisinvaluable.Schriersaidmanystudentsareveryexcitedorthisnewmajorprogramandaregladtobeabletobeapartoamorecomprehensiveandcollaborativedegreethatwillgivethemarealsenseohowtheywillworkintherealworld.TeyhavebeenaskingorthisoryearsTeyaresuperexcitedaboutitandeventhoughsomearegraduatingandwillmissbeingabletomajorinittheyaretellingtheirhighschoolriendswhoareconsideringMarist.NewdegreeapprovedingamesandemergingmediabyDanreccanoli15Dr.KarenSchrierDr.RonColeman
