17TelatterreasonaccordingtoMatheusmadethisservice-learningcollaborationbetweentheCSstudentsandtheSpanishstudentsideal.AttendeesatthecampwereintroducedtoHMLcodingtaughttheimportanceoastrongwebsiteandwereevengiveRaspberryPisandAndroidXOtabletstoworkontheirnalprojectscreatingawebsiteortheirschool.Computersciencestudentsgainedhands-onexperienceset-tingupalocalareanetworkandprovidingtechnologyeduca-tiontoaneconomicallyrepressedpopulationMatheussaid.Spanishstudentsgainedreal-worldexperienceascurriculumdevelopersandinterlocutorsbetweentheteamoComputerSciencestudentsandcampattendees.Matheussaidshewantsthiscollaborationtooccuryearlywithstudentshopeullyworkingatadierentschooleachyear.MariststudentswereaordedtheopportunitytoapplytheirknowledgeintheeldwhilegivingbacktoanunderprivilegedcommunitywithlimitedaccesstotechnologyeducationMatheussaid.Tiswasatremendouslyrewardingexperienceoreveryoneinvolved.Dr.EitelLauriaInformaonTechnologySystemsForsomeproessorsassessingwhetherornotastudentun-derstandsthematerialtheyareteachingcanhappenwhenitstoolatetosavethestudentromailingthecourse.DetectingacademicriskinstudentscanbeachallengingtaskbutDr.EitelLauriahasbecomeanexpertonthesubjecteversincehebeganapplyinghisbackgroundinanalyticstotheworldoeducation.In2011LauriawasapproachedbyJoshBaronsenioracademictechnologyofceratMarist.Baronhadtheideatodevelopaprogramthatcoulddetectearlysignsoacademicriskinstudentsaproblemincollegesanduniversitiesacrossthecountry.WhenyoutakethestatisticsasawholethenumbersarereallyquiterighteningLauriasaid.InitialresearchhadbeenconductedpreviouslyatPurdueUniversitybutwewantedtodomore.UsingMaristasatestschoolLauriaandhisteamostudentsdevelopedpredictivemodelsostudentsatacademicrisk.TentheyshitedtheirocusoutwestpartneringwithtwolargecommunitycollegesinCaliorniaCollegeotheRedwoodsandCerritosCollegeaswellastwohistoricallyblackuni-versitiesSavannahStateandNorthCarolinaAStateUniversity.Tegoalsothisprojectincludedthecreationoanearlyalertsystemtopredictstudentsatriskopoorperormanceduringtheinitialweeksoacourseollowedbythedeploy-mentoaninterventiontohelpthestudentsucceed.UsingtheSakaiLearningManagementsystemalongwithvariouspro-prietaryandopensourceanalyticstoolstheteamgatheredhis-toricdemographicandSakaicoursedataandputitthroughapredictivemodeltoapplyascore.Tisenabledthemtoidentiytheatriskstudentandintervene.Teinterventionsincludedearlyacademicalertsandeedbackromtheinstructor.JoshBarontooktheleadershiproleonthepilotprojectwiththepartnerschoolsandErikMoodyanassistantproessorintheSchooloSocialandBehavioralSciencestooktheleadonDr.CarolynMatheusDr.EitelLauriaanalyzingtheinterventions.AnalyticshitthebusinessworldrstbutnowithasmovedtootherareasLauriasaid.Administratorsandacultyatuniversitiesarereallyinterestedinseeingthisinormation.Tereishugeopportunityorgrowthintheuture.
