14RESEARCHMaristCollegehaslongbeenrecognizedoritsabilitytohelpstudentsx3gureoutwhattheyaspiretobeinlieandthenachievethosegoals.ForstudentswhohavechosenthepathocomputerscienceorinormationtechnologyandsystemstheMaristCollegeJointStudyprogramwiththeIBMCorporationprovidesanopportunitytodevelopthoseskillsgainrelevantworkexperienceandprepareortheuture.IBMisaleaderintechnologyinnovationandtheMariststudentswhoparticipateinthejointstudyprogramareabletocollaboratewithleading-edgetechnologistsonreal-worldprojects.TeMaristIBMJointStudyisaprogramthatofciallybeganinthemid-1980sasacooperativeventurebetweenMaristandIBM.TeprograminvolvesIBMemployeesMaristacultyandstudentsworkingtogetheronprojectssupportingtechnologytrends.Teresultmaybethedevelopmentoahardwareorsotwareprototypeoranewcutting-edgeapplication.HowardBakeranIBMemployeeandprojectmanagerortheMaristIBMJointStudyProgramsaidx1ctherex19sanaspectoresearchtoit.Teworkwedomayeventuallyleadtoasolutionorproductthatwillbeovalueanduse.x1dBakerhasbeenmanagingthejointstudyprogramon-siteatMaristCollegeoroveradecadeandhasseenx3rsthandthebenex3tstoIBMMaristCollegeacultyandstudents.Bakerexplainedthatthestudentactiv-ityintheprogramisanintegralcompo-nentbecauseatanygiventimesixto10studentscouldbepartothejointstudyteamworkingtodevelopaparticularsolution.OneexampleoanearlyprojectisthedigitizationandhostingotheFDRLibrarymaterials.Anotherkeyprojectinvolvestheadaptationotheopen-sourcelearningmanagementsot-wareusedbyMaristCollegeiLearnsothatitcouldrunex1ectivelyonIBMsotware.Asaresultthesotwareisnowaccessibletoexternalgroupssuchaslocalschooldistrictsorgovernmentalorganizationstouseoreducationorcollaboration.TeIBMAcademicInitiativehasbeenanothermainocusothejointstudyprogramoverthepastyears.TroughthisMaristacultycandevelopacourseorstudentsandthenthecoursemateri-alscanbegivenbacktoIBMwheretheywillbeputonlineorotherschoolstouseintheirclassrooms.TroughthejointstudyprogramMaristCollegehasbeentheleaderinprovidingcoursesandcertix3cateprogramsinzOSAIXandothercriticaltechnologiesrequiredtorunlargeenterprisecomputingenvironments.WithsupportromtheNationalScienceFoundationMaristCollegewasabletobuildanenterprisecomputingre-searchlabandpurchasethenewestandmostversatileIBMmainramecalledthezEnterpriseSystemwithazBladeExtensionzBX.Tissystemhasenor-mouscomputingpowerandversatilityandismanagedbyjointstudystudentsandMaristIexpertstosupportawidevarietyoacademicandindustry-basedresearchprojects.SomeexamplesincludeacancerresearchprojectromaJohnsHopkinsUniversityresearcherastudytoimprovethespeedanddegreeoaccuracyonseismicwavepropagationanopenacademicanalyticsinitiativeundedbytheBillandMelindaGatesFoundationtopredictstudentsuccessinonlinecoursesandmanymore.Troughtheirparticipationinthejointstudyprogramstudentsareintroducedtobrandnewemergingtechnologies.ForexamplestudentsandacultyromMaristCollegeareworkingwithkeyIBMemployeesandothermajornetworkingcompaniestodevelopanOpenFlowcertix3cationtestinglabatMarist.OpenFlowisanexampleosotwaredex3nednetworkingandisatechnologythatisogreatinteresttocompanieslikeGoogleandAmazon.InordertostimulatethemindsojointstudyparticipantsandostertheirprogressanareainthelowerlevelotheHancockCenternexttotheenterprisecomputingresearchlabhasbeendedi-MaristandIBMjoinforcesforcreativeprojectsMARISTIBMJOINTSTUDYPROGRAMOFFERSMANYEXCITINGOPPORTUNITIESbyMichelleCarpenter
