First Year Seminar Lecture Series: Dr. Andrew Stewart, Human Pancreatic Beat Cell Replication

Dn225 - Smart Lecture
This event is a part of the Common Reading series for incoming Marist first-year students. The Common Reading for fall 2013, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, tells a riveting story of the collision between ethics, race and medicine; of scientific discovery and faith healing; and of a daughter consumed with questions about the mother she never knew. Dr. Stewart’s talk explores the medical side of this debate focusing on human pancreatic beta cell replication. Expansion of pancreatic beta cells is a key goal of diabetes research, yet induction of adult human beta cell replication has proven frustratingly difficult. In part, this reflects a lack of understanding of cell cycle control in the human beta cell.
Dr. Andrew Stewart is the Director, Diabetes Obesity and Metabolism Institute at Mount Sinai Hospital. Dr. Andrew Stewart’s research focuses on understanding and developing novel means for inducing the replication and regeneration of insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells. As Chief of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Dr. Stewart and his research team were the first to demonstrate that adult human beta cells could be induced to replicate at substantial rates. Dr. Stewart, who has also been named Professor of Medicine (Endocrinology, Diabetes & Bone Diseases) will oversee the continued expansion of the Institute.
