Screening of New Film: White Like Me: Race, Racism & White Privilege in America by Tim Wise

Lowell Thomas
A screening of the brand new film: White Like Me: Race, Racism & White Privilege in America will take place next Monday, September 23rd at 7:00 PM in the Lowell Thomas Screening Room (#019).

Based on the work of acclaimed anti-racist educator and author Tim Wise, White Like Me explores race and racism in the U.S. through the lens of whiteness and white privilege. In a stunning reassessment of the American ideal of meritocracy and claims that we've entered a post-racial society, Wise offers a fascinating look back at the race-based white entitlement programs that built the American middle class, and argues that our failure as a society to come to terms with this legacy of white privilege continues to perpetuate racial inequality and race-driven political resentments today.

Lauded by Cornel West as an individual who walks in the footsteps of antislavery advocate John Brown, Tim Wise has spoken in all 50 states and at over 800 college and high school campuses, including Harvard, Stanford, Yale and Columbia. He has appeared on hundreds of radio and television programs, and is the author of six books. White Like Me is the first film to bring the full range of his work to the screen.

The screening will be followed by a discussion led by Professors Robyn Rosen and Lynn Eckert. It is the inaugural event in a year-long series titled Understanding Race and is sponsored by the Program in African Diaspora Studies.
