Immersed: The Writer's Life

Henry Hudson Room (Fn301)
College Social & Faculty Lecture Series
Lisa Neilson, Marist College Teaching Associate

The writing process varies from one writer to another; the only real requirement is to begin. But where do you go from there? What does it take to complete a piece and what might the path look like along the way? One way to achieve success regardless of what you’re researching and writing about is to set a daily goal. This means immersing yourself into the work. Obsess over the research or become the novel’s main character. Shut the door and resolve to keep it shut until you’ve accomplished your set objective. Training your waking mind to unlock from the humdrum thoughts of everyday life is essential to finding success in writing. This is the writer’s life; this is what the act of writing demands. Through informal conversation, Lisa will share her experience transforming an 80-page novella into a 300-page historical fiction novel by living such a life.
