Owen Flanagan, Duke University, "Never in Anger?"

HC2023 - Kondysar Presentation
The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies presents guest speaker Owen Flanagan, James B. Duke Professor of Philosophy, Professor of Neurobiology, and Affiliate of the Duke Initiative for Science & Society at Duke University.

The title of his talk is "Never in Anger?" We live in angry times and among angry people. A common view is that some anger is justified, for example, righteous political anger or indignation at social injustice. Stoics and Buddhists say that anger ought to be "extirpated root and branch." Dr. Flanagan tries to make sense of classical arguments that anger is always a vice, explore how little anger has to be said in its favor, and how we might give ourselves less permission to be angry, both personally and politically.
