Alluring Androids: Robots in Film, Photography, and Art: Talk by Dr.Julie Wosk

Filmmakers, photographers, and artists have long been fascinated by the idea of artificial women that seem alive. The Stepford Wives and Lara Croft, products of the imagination, are now becoming realized in the latest in female Japanese robots, which look so real they can easily fool the eye. This illustrated lecture showcases colorful images of female robots, androids, talking dolls, mannequins, and other artificial women. Ranging from early automatons to lifelike female heroines in today's video games, these images tell a startling tale of changing attitudes toward science and toward women themselves. Virtual women also raise provocative new questions: Do men and women view female robots differently? How do these images reveal men's fantasies and fears about women? What happens when we can no longer tell the difference between an artificial woman (or man) and a real one? Will these ultra-realistic robots enhance our lives or challenge our humanity?

Michael Fowler, Marist '09, currently of Clarkson University will speak on "An Introduction to Biometrics".

Abstract
Biometrics is the field of study in which humans are identified by their characteristics or traits. With recent advances in information technology, biometric systems have become both more sophisticated and more affordable. These systems have since leapt off of movie screens and into the real world as voice, facial, and retina identification systems are now widely practical. In this talk I will discuss current use and recent developments in biometrics. Specifically, I will discuss how one extracts unique speaker features from a measured sound signal as well as pattern recognition and dimension reduction techniques that allow us to distinguish between speakers.

From 1:00-11:00pm the Student Center 3rd Floor Trifecta will be filled with rows of various video games, consoles, board/tabletop/card games and a LAN area to bring your own laptop/computer. Be prepared to have a ton of fun.

We'll have $1 pizza and soda all day to fuel your gaming energy and various tournaments throughout the day including Super Smash Bros, a Magic the Gathering Draft, League of Legends, and more!
