MEMORANDUM TO THE MARIST COLLEGE COMMUNITY
FROM: DENNIS J. MURRAY
Today marks the 12th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. As a college community, we traditionally pause to remember that terrible day and the thousands of lives that were senselessly lost. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those who lost loved ones that day, especially those members of the Marist community whose lives were personally impacted by the tragedy.
Even though a dozen years have passed, the events of September 11 remain seared in our memory and remind us of how the country came together as one. As we mark the anniversary, please join me in thanking all those who serve our nation, particularly our first responders and the men and women in the military.
In observance of this solemn anniversary, a memorial Mass will be said at 12:05 p.m. in the Chapel, and the 9/11 cross will be on display there. The Chapel will be open all day on Wednesday for anyone who wishes to stop by, take a prayer card, and spend time in quiet reflection. For those who aren't familiar with it, the 9/11 cross is a Celtic cross fashioned from an I-beam taken from the South Tower of the World Trade Center and presented to the College by an alumnus. It is a treasured possession that links us forever with the victims and heroes of September 11.
I hope you will take a few moments today to remember the people we lost 12 years ago.
