Marcellin Champagnat Lecture: "Pope Francis and the Future of the Catholic Church"

Nelly Goletti Theatre
The election of Pope Francis has sparked a leadership revolution in the Catholic Church and energized Catholics worldwide. In this address John Allen explores the "Francis Revolution" and provides a framework for identifying challenges faced by the Church, the Pope and the Catholic people as the revolution continues.

John L. Allen Jr. is associate editor at the Boston Globe specializing in coverage of the Vatican and the Catholic Church. He also serves as senior Vatican analyst for CNN, and was for 16 years a correspondent for the National Catholic Reporter. He is the author of nine books on the Vatican and Catholic affairs. Veteran religion writer Kenneth Woodward of Newsweek described Allen as “the journalist other reporters – and not a few cardinals – look to for the inside story on how all the pope’s men direct the world’s largest church.”

Mathematics Seminar: "A Story Paradigm for Math Education"

Hancock
William Joel, Western Connecticut State University will talk on "A Story Paradigm for Math Education".

Abstract: A common definition of the term "professor" is one who professes what she sees as true within her discipline. That is, a professor tells the stories of her discipline. However, in today's educational environment, the story element is omitted from lessons, leaving nothing but facts and data. The purpose of this lecture is to show how what we know about mathematics we know as "story", and as such it is important to convey this aspect when
teaching mathematics.
