Catholic Studies Lecture: "The Seven Deadly Sins--Are There Really Seven? Are They Really Deadly?"

Dn237 - Classroom (No Tech)
Originally, the Seven Deadly Sins we know today were called the Eight Capital Vices -- How did they go from vices to sins? Did we lose a sin somewhere? And, what makes some sins "deadly"? Join us for a talk ranging from the Desert Fathers to some of the great Medieval Doctors of the Church, where we'll explore the fascinating history of these vices and sins.

Our lecturer, Dr. Gregory B. Sadler, teaches courses in Philosophy and Religious Studies at Marist College, produces popular lecture videos and series in YouTube, and is the President of ReasonIO, an educational content and consulting company. He is the author of Reason Fulfilled by Revelation (CUA Press: 2011) and dozens of articles, book chapters, and encyclopedia entries.

The Lecture will be in Donnelly 237, and is free and open to the public. Please come if you can and please encourage your students to come. We hope to see you there!

Archives and Special Collections Open House

Library
On November 13th from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. the Archives and Special
Collections will hold an Open House. Visitors will learn fascinating
stories from Lowell Thomas’s past: about growing up in a turn of the
century mining town, about navigating the line between journalistic ideals
and sensationalism, about how Thomas escaped obscurity to become world
famous, and about the tongue-in-cheek games of New Deal Politics.
Please stop by to view highlights from our collections, including original
letters written by Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and John Jay, a stone
that was once part of the famed London Bridge, a gem from the Tomb of the
Mughal conqueror Babur, and a brick from the tomb of St. Peter.
Additionally, a newly-rediscovered color aerial photograph of Marist
College in 1963 will be displayed, as well as items from the College’s rich
history.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to see our closed stacks areas and
learn more about what we do in the Archives and Special Collections.

The Archives and Special Collections is located on the ground floor of the
Library in room 134. Light refreshments will be served.
