BMBA500N001 In 2005, Thomas Friedman declared, "The world is flat". Digitization has created opportunities for sharing knowledge within and across firms anytime and anywhere. This new capability has tendered new opportunities and challenges for managers. On the one hand, firms can more efficiently manage their operations as well as reach across continents to fulfill their value chains. On the other hand, this has added an element of complexity to the management menu. Cooperative strategic business models such as international joint ventures, strategic alliances and supply chain partnerships have become common place, however their effectiveness varies. When organizations need to rely on virtual management, and partners can evolve into competitors, success turns on how to best share and protect know-how. Add to this mix the reality that such partners come from different cultures and it is a wonder that any of these cooperative business models succeed at all! After a brief overview of essential drivers and cooperative business models, we explore an actual case of a failed multi-national knowledge-transfer project. By delving into the intricacies of managing across cultures, continents and technologies we arrive at a working framework for creating stakeholder value in the global economy. |
