Credit for Prior Learning: A Guide for Students
Adults are constantly learning, whether attending a community or a four-year college institution or through non-academic settings such as, professional work experience, community service, or professional training programs. The Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) program in the school of Global & Professional Programs at Marist College gives adult students an additional opportunity to earn college credits towards an undergraduate degree.
Pre-requisites for Prior Learning Assessment:
- Matriculated at Marist
- Completed 12 credits at Marist
- College Writing requirement fulfilled
Standardized College Level Tests: Only at the time of matriculation will the college grant credit on an individual basis for any Advanced Placement (AP), College Proficiency Examinations (CPE), NYS Regents College Exams, ACT-PEP, or the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) tests completed prior to matriculation. The acceptable score and credit assignment shall be determined by the department concerned with the subject area in which credit is sought.
*Permission for matriculated students to use examination credits to meet degree requirements must be requested from the appropriate School Dean and will be granted only under extraordinary circumstances.

Beginning the PLA Process
Through a required Prior Learning Assessment Virtual Workshop students discover how learning from life experiences, both professional and in service to your community, may be accepted as an equivalent to college level learning. Students wishing to investigate Prior Learning Assessment must contact the PLA Coordinator Diane.Landau-Flayter@marist.edu for information. The evaluation of PLA applications by faculty will take up to six weeks. Students should plan accordingly.
