What: The Catholic Studies Committee is pleased to announce a public lecture by Janine Larmon Peterson of Marist's History Department. Dr. Peterson's lecture is entitled, "The Changing Face of Martyrdom: Holy Heretics in Late Medieval Italy," and will investigate the fascinating phenomenon of orthodox Christians, including clerics, venerating executed heretics as martyrs.

What: The African American Culture & Heritage Festival will focus on celebrating the history, culture and contributions of African Americans in Ulster County. Celebrate the history and cultural contributions of African Americans in the Hudson Valley and beyond through performances, demonstrations, food and hands-on activities.

What: Hunter Mountain's Oktoberfest features authentic German and German-American entertainment in the northern Catskills. The modern celebration of the harvest features a farmers market, vendors, free crafts and much more. Free admission also makes it a huge plus!

What: This fall, the College will once again host events associated with the Big Read, a public literacy campaign headed up by the Poughkeepsie Public Library. This year, the focus is on Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, and there are several enriching events planned.
When/Where: On October 6 at 7 pm, Professors of English Judith Saunders and Rose De Angelis and Assistant Professor of English Josh Kotzin will discuss the book in its literary and social contexts in the Marist College Performing Arts Room. There will be a Harlem Renaissance Poetry Slam on October 7, at 7 pm in the Marist College Henry Hudson Room and on October 8, 10 am to 12 pm in the Marist College Nelli Goletti Theatre Associate Professors of History Sally Dwyer-McNulty, Fred Opie, and Robyn Rosen and Assistant Professor of History Steve Garabedian will explore the significance of race, gender, class, and culture in early 20th century African-American life, as well as the politics of Hurston’s novel in American history.

What: Author Suzanne Vromen will discuss "Shedding Light on Dark Times: The Rescue of Jewish Children by Belgian Convents During the Holocaust" in a talk at Marist College. The event is free and open to the public.

What: Anti Slavery Event hosted by hosted by the First Congressional Church, United Church of Christ and the Mid-Hudson Antislavery History Project. A reception and book signing with Clyde Griffen, co-author of "Main Street to Mainframes," will be held at 2:30 p.m. At 4 p.m., there will be program on Mid-Hudson anti-slavery history in words and song with history re-enactors and the Duchess Antislavery singers. $5, donation. At 5 p.m., the church will be dedicated as a site on the New York Underground Railroad Heritage Trail. There will be a harvest buffet supper at 6 p.m. Tickets for the supper are $12, per person and reservations required by Sept. 9.

Memorial Day is on May 25th

What: Louis C. Zuccarello, a professor emeritus at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, will deliver the talk: "An Overview of Catholics in Poughkeepsie: Some Recurring Themes."
