Ringed by the stunning Sierra Madre mountains, Monterrey is called the "City of the Mountains." The historic Barrio Antiguo (Old District) hosts museums, musical events, and plentiful restaurants and cafes. Besides the natural beauty of its setting, Monterrey has established itself as one of the chief economic centers of Latin America, a center for finance and industry that has taken on an increasingly important role in the North American economy.
Monterrey is the capital of the state of Nuevo Leon, and is located approximately 150 miles from the Texas border. It is an ideal city in which to study the language and culture of Mexico.
The program is based at the Universidad de Monterrey (UDEM), a private, modern university founded in 1969 by a number of religious groups, including the Marist Brothers. Approximately 10,000 students are enrolled in more than twenty schools of the university. UDEM awards undergraduate degrees in twenty majors and graduate degrees in ten majors. UDEM is known for its holistic approach to education, and offers an impressive co-curricular and extracurricular program of activities.
Located on an attractive campus on the outskirts of the city, UDEM's growing campus features a new library and student union building. UDEM is situated about 20 minutes from downtown Monterrey (via shuttle bus or taxi).
Through an onsite orientation, homestay, language training, and courses at the Universidad de Monterrey, students come to intimately know the culture and society of Mexico.
The program offers both semester and academic year options, and students earn 15 credits per semester. A minimum of one year of college-level Spanish is a requirement for admission to the program.
Accommodation is not provided by the program; students must make their own housing arrangements.
The program is administered by Marist College in cooperation with the UDEM International Office. The International Office at UDEM advises students, organizes an onsite orientation, and coordinates housing, and registration.
