The IT Network Department is responsible for installing, maintaining and upgrading the computer network infrastructure of the college. This is a fairly large and complex network, supporting nearly 5000 computers at the main campus and 3 extension sites located around the Hudson Valley.
In addition to the physical infrastructure, the Network staff also manage the servers required to administrate such a large network, including DHCP, DNS, and VPS servers. They monitor the network for service disruptions as well as violations in network use policy. They implement and maintain firewalls to secure portions of the network from harm and assist college management in setting computer security policies.
Along with their normal duties, the Network Department staff also participate in joint studies and grants that involve advanced computer technology, such as implementing the Internet2 connection and current research on video-on-demand services.
