CCEL Hosts "Post-Graduate Gap Year" Information Session
Although sometimes associated only with the year after high school graduation, "gap year" opportunities increasingly provide students with new ways to make the transition from college to the working world. On Sept. 20, Center for Civic Engagement and Leadership Program Coordinator Fiona Dwyer-McNulty '18 led a Post-Graduate Gap Year information session for students and faculty. The meeting encouraged students in all majors to consider pursuing a year-long experience serving a nonprofit or governmental organization after graduation.
The information session was inspired by the Post-Graduate Gap Year Resource Guide, which Ms. Dwyer-McNulty created over the summer while working for CCEL. Organized by area of interest, ranging from "Health" to "Arts/Humanities" and "Immigration," the guide provides students with a key pipeline for identifying opportunities that speak to their interests. “The guide is really just the first step for us,” she explains. “We [at CCEL] recognize how many post-graduate opportunities there are, so we wanted to condense all of that information in a way that is helpful for students. This first information session was great because we were able to get a sense of what students have questions about and we will use that information to develop future programs.”
CCEL Director Dr. Melissa Gaeke added, “We believe that these opportunities represent an important next step that builds upon students' experiential learning here at Marist.” Katy Zieliznski '18, a double major in Political Science and Communications, agreed that “The gap year information session was a great way to start planning for life after college.” She said, “The Center for Civic Engagement collected tons of valuable information for us to begin applications and I’m excited to work with them throughout my senior year to explore possible career opportunities.”
The CCEL will continue to host programs throughout the school year geared toward exposing students to post-graduate gap year opportunities and aiding them with their applications.
