Our curriculum provides a solid training in the skills of interpretive reading, oral self-presentation, and writing through a trio of courses required in the freshman/sophomore years in literary analysis, drama and dramatic performance, and the varieties of writing. These studies also enable the student to make a wise choice of a concentration within the major: either in Literature, Theatre, or Writing. (Click on the buttons to the left for details about the requirements in each of these concentrations.) The Capping course in the Senior year brings all our majors together in reflection on the common values of their diverse studies. Many of our students in their junior or senior years also pursue internships--in professional writing or in drama, for example--which help them get launched on a career. The upper-level courses in each of these concentrations are relatively small--typically 15-20--thus insuring an atmosphere conductive to students' active involvement and questioning. The faculty are not only accomplished scholars and writers but also knowledgeable advisors and dedicated teachers. They are readily accessible in our handsome new Liberal Arts building, Fontaine Hall, which contains a black-box theater that will be used for theatre classes and for experimental productions, and several classrooms equipped with state-of-the-art computer technology for research and instruction. An English major cultivates those skills--of reading, critical thinking, speaking, and writing--that are essential to success in a broad spectrum of careers: teaching, publishing, law, journalism, communications and public relations, and management. An English major also provides that knowledge of the artistic and intellectual heritage which is invaluable for participating creatively in the common conversation of our culture about what is worthwhile. For both professional and personal reasons a major in English at Marist is well worth considering.
