Professional Writing at Marist

Professional Writing at Marist helps students develop skills and prepare for careers in such fields as editing, marketing, journalism, law, and organizational writing.  Professional writing courses help English majors and minors fulfill degree requirements and are open to students from all majors.

 On-campus events regularly bring
professionals in the field to campus.
 Pictured here is Albany Times-Union
editor Rex Smith, who visited campus
on October 27, 2014, to meet informally
with students and to deliver a lecture on
journalism and technology in the 21st
century. The event was sponsored by the
Department of English and the Honors
 Program.

Professional writing courses available include:

  • Introduction to Professional Writing (offered every semester)
  • Business Writing (offered yearly)
  • Technical Writing (offered yearly)
  • Professional Writing Internship (available year-round)

Students in Business Writing and Technical Writing classes have served as consultants to nonprofits in the Hudson Valley. For information on specific ways that graduates have drawn upon these and other experiences in their professional lives, see "SLA
Snapshot" profiles of English alums Christi Sheehan, James Napoli, Daniel Buzi, Amanda Mulvihill, Kristen O'Brien, and Jessica Durante.
