Because sharing and critiquing work is crucial to one's development as a writer, workshops are the centerpiece of the conference. To this end, participants will attend morning workshops in their respective genre (poetry or fiction) daily. Workshops at the 2008 Marist Summer Writing Institute are limited to ensure that all participants will have ample time to work directly with our faculty in group as well as on an individual basis.
In addition to the workshop experience, participants will get to choose from a wide variety of daily writing studios, where writing professionals in all three genres offer their best exercises, lectures and discussion techniques to SWI. Topics of these one-hour studios range from a tour of the history of the English language to the Art of Revision. Participants get to choose what studios they wish to attend, making SWI a personal experience!
The SWI offers a reading every evening. In addition to the Keynote Reading by Michael Martone, there will be multiple faculty readings, and the week will end with a Student Reading and Reception, where participants will have the opportunity to share their revised work with the SWI community.
