MEMORANDUM TO THE MARIST COLLEGE COMMUNITY
FROM: DAVID YELLEN
SUBJECT: Eid al-Adha
Tonight marks the beginning of Eid al-Adha, or the Festival of Sacrifice, for the Muslim community. One of the two most important festivals in the Muslim calendar, this one-day holiday commemorates Ibrahim's willingness to follow God's command to sacrifice his son Ishmael. It also marks the end of Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca. Eid al-Adha is observed through prayers and family gatherings. Muslims are obliged to share food and money with the poor so that they can take part in the celebrations. There are a number of Muslims in the Marist community, and I hope you will join me in wishing them a blessed Eid.
