Julia Parris

Julia Parris is a senior from Brooklyn, New York, and originally from Georgetown, Guyana. She is a political science major with a philosophy minor and is involved in the Black Student Union, Marist Honors Program, and ARCO (Appreciating Races and Creating Opportunities).

What made you decide to come to Marist?
When I visited Marist for the first time, I felt comfortable and immediately pictured myself laying under a tree in the warmer weather on the campus green. Marist is a tight-knit community that is increasingly growing and diversifying in culture, people, and opportunities and I felt at home on campus. What ultimately sold me was all the wonderful opportunities that the Honors Program had to offer and I couldn’t wait to be a part of it. In addition, I loved that Marist was within a few hours to New York City by train and I could easily go home to visit friends and family members.

What has been your favorite part about the school?
The support and love that I have received from my professors and college administration. They have offered personal advice when I was struggling or supported me with inventive research project proposals. If I was struggling with an assignment I felt positive that I could seek help from my professors even outside of office hours. Some of the best advice and opportunities that I have been exposed to on and off campus were suggestions given to me by my professors. It feels amazing to know that I have people supporting my dreams at goals so having a great relationship with them is one of my favorite parts about school.

What is the one piece of advice that you would give to an incoming freshman?
Do not be afraid to ask questions, even if they’re silly! Make mistakes. Be open minded because college is about finding yourself and learning from the people around you. And have fun!
