Victoria (Curnan) Mulqueen is a member of Marist's M.A. in School Psychology Class of 2011. She holds a BA in Psychology/ Special & Childhood Education from Marist.
Tell us about your work history before Marist, including years of experience, industry, companies, and positions.
Before entering the Marist School Psychology Graduate Program I was teaching special education full-time at Pearl Ridge Elementary in Aiea, Hawaii. I worked and lived there following completion of my undergraduate degree. After returning to New York to begin my master’s degree I have been substitute teaching and filling leave replacement positions in the Poughkeepsie City School District.
Current Employer and Position
I have been employed as a School Psychologist since the 2011-2012 school year. I worked for ONC BOCES doing itinerant school psychological services for the Gilboa-Conesville Central School District, as well as the Center for Spectrum Services during that school year. Since then I have been employed as a School Psychologist/ Behavior Specialist for the Cairo-Durham Central School District in Cairo, New York, focusing my work on students with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
Why did you choose Marist to further your education?
I wanted to attend the School Psychology Graduate Program at Marist since beginning my undergraduate education here in 2005. As an undergraduate, I had many of the same professors who taught in the graduate program, and with such a positive experience I looked forward to continuing to learn from them.
Tell us about a project or course that was particularly meaningful to your professional development.
While I have learned a great deal from all of the courses I have taken, Multicultural Perspectives of Counseling was one of the most useful and eye-opening. The class gave us an opportunity to examine our own biases and how they can inadvertently impact our work as School Psychologists, and how exploring those can help us change our perspective.
How has a degree from Marist enhanced your career?
Marist is a well-known and well-respected institution from which I am proud to have two degrees. Even while in Hawaii, Marist had an excellent reputation and opened up career opportunities in areas in which I never thought I would have the opportunity to work. Also, attending Marist as a graduate student has enhanced my relationship with the faculty and staff who have worked in a number of other institutions, which also opens up a number of opportunities for me.
If you took an online class or had online learning as part of a regular course, tell us about your experiences – any tips or suggestions to pass along to future students?
iLearn became a large part of many of the courses I took during my undergraduate and graduate programs, including for grading, quizzes, assignment submission and was home to many class resources. It was particularly useful when I was vacationing with family over the summer, and able to sit on the porch of our cabin in Lake George and still submit my assignments! One tip I would pass along to future students would be to familiarize yourself with the many aspects and uses of iLearn before the last minute. It can be extremely useful, but as with anything with which you are not familiar, it takes time to learn how to navigate.
