Samantha Wignal

Samantha is an international student majoring in bio-med. She is originally from Kingston, Jamaica.

Why did you choose Marist College?
It was in New York, not too far from the city, and had a good science program with a beautiful campus.

What was your favorite class? Why?
Currently, my medical technology class is my favorite, mainly because I’m learning information that is directly applicable to the real world, as well as real illnesses and methods of identifying these illnesses.

What is the best part of living on campus?
Being in a relatively close proximity to the people you become friends with, as well as the buildings you have classes in, which helps you to maximize the amount of time you’re able to sleep before having to get out of bed.

Where is your favorite place on campus?
I really like the Marist beach, especially in the spring when the grass is visible and lush and half the campus comes out to sunbathe and play games with their friends. It overlooks the river and the tree line is pretty majestic in the beginning of fall as well, when the leaves begin to change to various colors.

How do you connect with friends and family at home while at Marist?
By using Skype, Whatsapp, and other social media such as Twitter.

What kind(s) of extracurricular activities are you involved in?
Intramural basketball, Black Student Union (BSU), Booster Club, Residence Hall Council (RHC)

Tell us about a “cultural” moment you had at Marist (culture shock, funny story, etc.).
The fact that everyone who is originally from America tends to greet people by saying “Hey, what’s up?” or “Hey, how are you?” or some other variation but they never stop to actually allow you to answer! That was new for me. In my country, we generally just greet by saying hey/hello/hi if we aren't interested in how the person is doing.

What do you do for fun outside of Marist?
Visit the city to shop or go to events that take place there.
