Amal Mohamed is a member of Marist's Class of 2018. She is an international student from Hargesia, Somaliland and is a Communications major with a concentration in Journalism and a minor in Psychology.
Why did you choose Marist College?
I chose Marist because the campus was really beautiful and it was close to the city. There is a great communication program here at Marist, and there are many internships offered, which will help you determine what you want to do with your life.
What was your favorite class? Why?
My favorite class is Introduction to Communication. I had one of the best professors, and it was the first class that introduced me to communications and I realized how interested I was in the subject. His class was very engaging and he was really nice.
What is the best part of living on campus?
The best part is meeting new people in your dorm or in the clubs and different doing activities with them.
Where is your favorite place on campus?
My favorite place is the campus green. It is a nice place that you can hang out with friends, and watch the sunset and have a good time with friends. A great place to take Instagram pictures too.
How do you connect with friends and family at home while at Marist?
I call them on skype whenever they are free on the weekend. The time difference is a huge issue sometimes, but you just have to talk to them and arrange a time in advance.
What kind(s) of extracurricular activities are you involved in?
I am part of the Black Student Union, the Student Ambassador Program, and Campus Ministry.
Tell us about a “cultural” moment you had at Marist (culture shock, funny story, etc.).
One time, I went to the dining hall and I got a lot of French fries and some girl asked me if we have French Fries in Africa. At first, I thought it was a joke, but she wasn't joking!
What do you do for fun outside of Marist?
I enjoy hanging out with the other international students at Marist and going to the city with them, the mall or watching movies.
