Center for Sports Communication to host Northeast meeting for 5th time

Panel discussions open to Marist community, livestream available to general public

POUGHKEEPSIE (November 6, 2016) – On Monday, Nov. 7, the Marist College Center for Sports Communication will host the Associated Press Sports Editors Northeast regional meeting. The day-long event will be held in Kondysar Presentation Room (2023) in the Hancock Center on the Marist College campus and is open to the entire Marist community. Those not at Marist are invited to watch and participate in the event, as all panels and presentations will be livestreamed. The stream can be found both on the Center for Sports Communication’s Facebook and Twitter pages and here. There will also be an ongoing conversation on Twitter at #APSEMarist. All are welcomed to participate in the dialogue and ask questions of the day’s panelists. 

The meeting will run from at 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will bring sports editors and journalists from across the Northeast to participate in a series of panels and presentations. The day will begin a session moderated by Justin Pelletier of Maine’s Sun-Journal on best practices for covering a sports beat while maintaining professional relationships with athletes and teams. It will continue at 11 a.m. with a panel about the sports media habits of millennials, featuring Marist students Anna Grazulis, Olivia Jaquith, Drew Mihans, and Michael Wallace. Following a networking lunch, where student partner with attending APSE members, the afternoon starts at 1:15 p.m. with a session on the sport and society, providing strategies for how sports journalists can best cover the intersection of sport and social issues. This panel will feature Hudson Taylor of Athlete Ally, an organization founded to stand up against LGBT discrimination in sport; Dr. Ellen Staurowksy of Drexel University, and Dr. Peter Kaufman of SUNY New Paltz. This panel will be moderated by Center for Sports Communication director Keith Strudler. The day’s final panel at 2:45 p.m. will discuss digital strategies for sports journalism and will be moderated by BostonGlobe.com sports editor Matt Pepin.

This will mark the fifth time Marist has hosted the meeting of this important sports organization and builds on the partnership between APSE Northeast Region and the Center for Sports Communication. Through this partnership, Marist has welcomed such journalists as Dan Shaughnessy, T.J. Quinn, Selena Roberts, Jane McManus, and other top professionals to the Marist campus and created strong working ties between leading professionals and Marist’s academic and student communities.
