MARIST TO CONDUCT THREE EVENTS FOR BIG READ
POUGHKEEPSIE -
Marist College will again participate in the Poughkeepsie Public Library District's Big Read program. The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment of the Arts, in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest. It is designed to encourage literacy and restore reading to the center of American culture by providing communities with the opportunity to read and discuss a single book. The Library District, Marist College and other Big Read partners, including Dutchess Community College and Vassar College, will sponsor events throughout the month of October centering on the cultural and historic significance of "Their Eyes Were Watching God" by Zora Neale Hurston. Three events will be held at Marist next week.
On Tuesday, October 6, at 7:00 p.m. in the Student Center's Performing Arts Room, a panel discussion on the book's literary and social contexts will be led by English professors Judith Saunders, Rose DeAngelis and Joshua Kotzin.
On Wednesday, October 7, at 7:00 p.m. an open-mic Harlem Renaissance Poetry Reading sponsored by Marist's Literary Arts Society and Sigma Tau Delta will be held in the Henry Hudson Room in Fontaine Hall. Everyone is invited to bring a poem from the Harlem Renaissance to share or just come by to listen to great poetry from that period.
On Thursday, October 8, at 10:00 a.m. history professors Sara Dwyer-McNulty, Steve Garabedian, Fred Opie and Robyn Rosen will explore the significance of race, gender, class and culture in early 20th-century African-American life, as well as the politics of Hurston's novel in American history. That panel discussion will be held in the Nelly Goletti Theatre, located in the Student Center.
All Big Read events at Marist are free and open to the public. For more information on Big Read and other Poughkeepsie Public Library District events, visit
