EFFRON LECTURE IN JEWISH STUDIES TO FOCUS ON "JEWISH ACTION"
POUGHKEEPSIE -
The Marist College William and Sadie Effron Lecture in Jewish Studies will observe its 33rd anniversary with a talk by Dr. Jack Wertheimer, "Whatever Happened to the Jewish People? Why the Bonds of Collective Jewish Action Are Fraying."
The event will take place on Monday, October 26, 2009, at 7 p.m. in the Nelly Goletti Theatre, located in the Student Center at Marist College. It is free and open to the public with refreshments to follow.
Dr. Wertheimer is the Joseph and Martha Mendelson Professor of American Jewish History at The Jewish Theological Seminary. A leading expert on American Jewish communal relations and identity, he is the author or editor of more than a dozen volumes, including The American Synagogue: A Sanctuary Transformed (Cambridge University Press); The Uses of Tradition: Jewish Continuity in the Modern Era (JTS/Harvard); and A People Divided: Judaism in Contemporary America (Basic Books), which won the National Jewish Book Award. From 1997 to 2007, Dr. Wertheimer served as provost of The Jewish Theological Seminary.
Local business leaders William and Sadie Effron founded the lecture series in 1976 to raise awareness of Jewish history, culture and current affairs at Marist and in the community.
