Honoring our Veterans

Nov. 11 events recognize Marist veterans and active duty military

POUGHKEEPSIE (November 7, 2016) – Marist alumni, students, faculty, staff, and friends who are United States Veterans or who are on active duty are invited to celebrate Veterans Day at Marist this Friday, November 11. The entire Marist community is welcome to participate in the 11:45am flag raising by ROTC cadets in front of Donnelly Hall and take in the military memorabilia on display in the Murray Student Center.

Veterans, active duty military, and guests are then invited to the Hudson Riverview Rooms in the Student Center for a complimentary luncheon featuring guest speaker and alumna, Mariel Sosa Jaurez '02. The event is sponsored by the Office of Alumni Relations. [Mariel Sosa Juarez]

Sosa Juarez graduated from Marist with a B.S. in Social Work. Having grown up in New York City, Mariel viewed "going away to college" as something beyond her reach. But in her own words, "The Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) extended that branch and provided the tools and relationships that enabled me to succeed."

Upon leaving Marist, Mariel enlisted in the United States Army, looking for adventure and a way to pay off her student loans. She was quoted in a 2009 New York Post article as saying, "I wanted to do something different." She served in Iraq as an 88H Cargo Specialist and ultimately became a forklift operator. After one year, she was placed in HQ platoon for administrative support.

Mariel obtained a Master’s in Social Work from New York University in 2010 and is currently a readjustment counselor with the Department of Veterans Affairs on Staten Island. She provides individual, couple’s, and group therapy for combat veterans, survivors of sexual trauma, and bereavement counseling for surviving family members.
