Research Interests:

My lab investigates the impact of prenatal exposure to drugs on developmental, especially of the brain.  We are currently working on a comparing the effects of prenatal methadone exposure to prenatal heroin exposure using an avian model. We hope to collaborate with an imaging center and use DTI to view white matter. We made great progress in tagging the precursors to neurotransmitters with multiple fluorine atom tags for use with magnetic resonance spectroscopy and funcitonal imaging. The National Institute on Drug abuse funds this work. This method will enable us to study the etiology of susceptibility to addiction and mental illness as we unravel how perinatal stress creates vulnerabilities in the neural substrates.
