A note on times: The starting time indicated is when the Community Service van will leave from Donnelly Hall. The ending time is the approximate arrival time back at Marist. Please leave yourself a little extra time. For example, if you have a class that starts at 2:00, do not sign up for a service placement that ends at 2:00.

Campus Ministry Van

Van Drivers
Take your fellow volunteers safely to and from their sites. Must be 18 and have a valid driver's license. Shifts are 1.5-2.5 hours.
Times: Many shifts available, especially on Wednesdays. Just tell us what times you are free during the week (8:30am-5:30pm) on your sign-up form. We need about 26 van drivers for the volunteer program to run smoothly, so please consider signing up!

Preschool/Head Start/Daycare

Astor Head Start
A school-readiness program for toddlers through pre-K. You'll assist in a classroom setting. Spanish speaking is a plus. Creativity is encouraged- bring a musical instrument or sporting equipment to show the kids, teach them a song or a game, tell them what college is like! If you sign up for 9-11, indicate if you would like to work in the Nurturing Room with the toddlers (18 months +). If you have not volunteered here before, orientation is required. Orientation is Wednesday, September 17, 2014 from 11am-1pm. MEN NEEDED in addition to women.
Times: Monday through Thursday, 9-11 or 11-1

Poughkeepsie Child Development Center
A preschool/ kindergarten/ daycare center located just up the road from Marist. You'll be helping in a classroom setting. Spanish speaking is a plus.
Times: Monday or Tuesday 9-11; Tuesday or Thursday 2:30-4:30

Elementary Schools and In-School Programs

Healthy Kids Program at Smith School
In-school program at the Early Learning Center, a citywide kindergarten program.
Times: Monday, 10:30-12:30

Clinton Elementary School
A public elementary school for grades 1-5 in the city of Poughkeepsie. Orientation is required.
Times: Tuesday or Thursday, 8:30-10:30

Samuel F.B. Morse Magnet School
A public elementary school for grades 1-5 in the city of Poughkeepsie.  Orientation is required. 
Times: Wednesday, 8:30-10:30

Violet Avenue School
A public elementary school for grades K-5 in the town of Poughkeepsie. Help out in the classroom, in the library, or at lunch/ recess.
Times: Monday through Wednesday, 11:30-1:30 or 1:30-3:30; Thursday 1:30-3:30.

Holy Trinity School
A Catholic K-8 school in the town of Poughkeepsie.  If you have not volunteered here before, orientation is required.
Times: Wednesday, 8:30-10:30 or 12:30-2:30; Tuesday 2:45-4:45, or Thursday, 3-5

Regina Coeli School
A Catholic K-8 school in Hyde Park.  If you have not volunteered here before, orientation is required.
Times: Monday or Friday 11:30-1:30, 2:45-4:45; Wednesday 2:45-4:45 (later times are for after school program).

St. Peter's School
A Catholic K-8 school in Hyde Park. During the school day volunteers are needed to teach computer classes, work with ESL students, coach sports (especially track) and help in the lunchroom. Indicate your interests on the sign up form.  If you have not volunteered here before, orientation is required.
Times: Monday or Friday, 11:30-1:30, 2:45-4:45 (later time is for after school program)

After School Programs and Activities

Harriet Tubman Academic Skills Program
An after-school program for at-risk children in the city of Poughkeepsie, K-8. Monday through Thursday: help the kids with homework. Friday: special activities, including dance, cooking, and arts and crafts.
Times: Monday through Friday, 3:30-5:30

Bridges to Hope Tutoring
A small one-on-one tutoring and homework help program. K-8.
Time: Wednesday, 3:15-5:15

Family Services After School Program
Bring your skills and interests to work with elementary-aged children in the city of Poughkeepsie. Lead a sports activity, a performing arts activity, tutor kids, etc. Bring your ideas and energy! Orientation requred
Times: Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday 2-4

Girl Scouts
Help with special activities with Girl Scouts- Heart of the Hudson
Times: TBA

Project Thunder
A homework center for City of Poughkeepsie students grades 3-8.
Times: Monday through Thursday, 3:00-5:00

Nursing/ Senior Living Homes

Pines of Poughkeepsie Nursing Home
Visit with patients and lead games and activities during their recreation time. Come with lots of ideas and initiative!
Time: Monday or Friday, 1:45-3:45. Also the possibility of a morning schedule (not definite yet).

Manor at Woodside Independent Living Home
Assist with activities and visit with residents at this independent senior living complex. Two volunteers per day. Ideas for new and fun activities are welcome!
Time: Wednesday, 2-4 or Friday, 10-12

Nonprofit Organizations

Catholic Charities
Catholic Charities is an organization that provides services to immigrants, people living in poverty, and other underserved populations. Work on various projects in the Catholic Charities office. They need Spanish speakers, people with graphic design and advertising skills, and people interested in learning more about the nonprofit world!
Times: Flexible

Community Family Development Center
A preschool and after-school program in the City of Poughkeepsie. Help is needed with filing and other office work.
Times: Thursday, 9:30-11:30

Dress For Success
An organization that provides interview suits, work wardrobes, and job support for disadvantaged women. Organize the Dress For Success boutique, sort donated clothes, and help in the office. Three volunteers maximum. If you have your own car, you may also help with suitings for clients; see "Cars Only" section for more information.
Time: Monday, 1:45-3:45

Suited To Succeed
An organization that provides interview suits, work wardrobes, and job support for disadvantaged men. Organize the Suit For Success store, sort donated clothes, and help in the office. Two volunteers needed.

Soup Kitchen

Lunch Box Soup Kitchen
Prepare meals (morning shift) or serve meals (lunchtime shift) for people in need in Poughkeepsie. The Lunch Box provides free meals to those who need them every day of the week.
Times: Wednesday, 9:00am-11:00am or 11:00am-1:00pm. Thursday, 9:00am-11:00am, Friday, 11:00am-1:00pm

Marist Meals
Volunteers pick up unused food from the Dining Hall and deliver it to Hillcrest House, an emergency homeless shelter in Poughkeepsie. This takes less than an hour, and you can do it with a friend or two. We need people every day of the week!
Times: M-F, 9:00pm

Grace Smith House and School Outreach Program

A new program that runs violence prevention workshops in the Poughkeepsie schools. Educators, curriculum developers, and outreach workers are needed. 12 hours of training are required; I will put you in touch with the organizer.
If you are unable to attend these trainings and are still interested in working with Grace Smith House, which provides shelter and support for battered women and their children, you can help out in their offices without a training. Indicate on your form whether you want to work in the office or for the School Outreach program.

Dress For Success
Volunteers are needed to help with sorting and organizing clothes and sometimes suitings (fitting women who have job interviews with appropriate clothing).

Children's Home of Poughkeepsie
Work with children (up through high school age) who are living at the Children's Home. This can include just visiting, homework help, etc. Indicate your interest and I will give you an application form to fill out.

Dutchess Society for the  Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA)
Cat socializers and dog walkers needed at the local SPCA shelter. Must attend an orientation, held at the shelter the first Tuesday of each month at 7pm. Spots at orientation are limited.

Girl Scouts
Assist in leading a Girl Scout troop in the area.

Suited to Succeed                                                                                                                                                                                         Volunteers are needed to help with sorting and organizing clothes.

Vassar Warner Adult Home
Visit with residents, help with activities, assist with various duties at the home. Volunteers must be interested in the field of health care (especially psychology or neurology) or social services. Two Marist volunteers maximum.
Times: Activity periods at the Home are from 2-4.
