Marist College Campus Sustainability Advisory Committee (CSAC)

In October 2007, President Murray appointed the Campus Sustainability Advisory Committee to advise the President, Board of Trustees, faculty, and staff with developing recommendations for campus sustainability with the goal of meeting resource demands without undermining the ability of the planet to provide for future generations. Marist College's Campus Sustainability Advisory Committee commits the college to sustainable leadership in three areas:

  • research and education
  • campus operations
  • stewardship in the Marist community

CSAC Goals

  • Educating faculty, staff and students about the impact of their actions on the environment
  • Identifying, establishing and publicizing sustainability principles, goals and best practices
  • Providing a framework for guiding sustainable procedures, programs and initiatives
  • Monitoring and reporting progress on campus sustainability initiatives

To date, CSAC has met five times and organized into the following working groups:

  1. Teaching and Research
  2. Co-curricular and Community
  3. Facilities, Operations and Processes
  4. Finances, Assessment and Evaluation
  5. Marketing and Public Relations
  6. Advocacy and Memberships

CSAC is pleased to announce its recommendation and purchase by the College of indoor and outdoor recycling/trash containers to be placed throughout the campus in the spring 2008 semester. In addition, CSAC is sponsoring a campus seminar on January 31, 2008 as part of the national Focus the Nation program (www.focusthenation.org) in the Performing Arts Room of the Student Center. This day long event will occur simultaneously with hundreds of other higher education institutions across the U.S. The "focus" is on climate change, the role colleges must play in educating about it and the steps required to reduce the impact of each college upon climate change. More information about the program will be forthcoming to the college community
