FYS 101 Muslims in the US and Europe

This course will explore Muslim and Arab communities in Western democracies (Europe and the U.S.). Today, Muslims represent the largest religious minority in Western Europe and an important minority in the U.S. Most of them have arrived over the last several decades. How and why did Muslims and Arabs migrate to the West? How are these communities adapting to their new environment? Are Muslims mostly integrated or radicalized? Are Muslims in Europe different from those in the U.S.? What will be the future of Muslim communities in the West? We will learn a lot about Muslims and Arabs and will even explore how they are represented in one European and one American film. In addition, all through the course we will also work on a series of skills (writing, public presentation, and information literacy) that are essential to your success at Marist and beyond.
