SMART: Social Media as a Revolutionary Technology

This course will examine the rise of the information age and the ubiquitous presence and impact of current social media such as Facebook, Instagram, You Tube, and Twitter. The culture of our mass-media society will be explored, including topics such as our globally connected society, ethical issues pertaining to the distribution and manipulation of information, and the digital divide. This course will historically evaluate major social, economic, and cultural paradigm shifts—from the industrial revolution to the information technology revolution—and the role information plays in modern society. This course will utilize models designed for strategically leveraging social media technologies for promoting social good.
