FYS 101 Social Justice and The Wire

This course is designed to expose students to the various issues surrounding social justice in America. Course material is categorized into three thematic areas: Urban Policy, Social Justice, and Sustainability.

The critically acclaimed HBO television series, The Wire, is used to complement the course’s primary texts to aid in the discussion on economics (employment, financial operations of government vs. private organizations, economic policy), political science (policy creation, elections, voting), urban affairs (safe communities, urban planning, sustainable cities), criminal justice (police, crime, incarceration), and government (organizational management, levels of government, public/private partnerships).

This course will expose students to a diverse set of problems, give them tools to critically evaluate them, and work toward creating solutions.
