Around Campus

Spring Semester 2023

aroundcampus-spotlight

Let’s recap: In early March, The Center for Career Services hosted nearly 50 employers across a variety of industries for the Marist Career and Internship Fair. At this event, students dressed professionally with resumes in hand, networked with employers, and learned how to make career connections right on campus.

The turnout: about 600 students RSVP'd to the event at the McCann center.

Company Callbacks: 83% of Marist students participate in internships during their time here, with companies continuously requesting Marist student candidates. “I receive constant feedback from employers saying, ‘we want Marist students,’ ‘there’s something about Marist students,’ and that ‘Marist students always seem more prepared,’” said Stephanie Paquin, Assistant Director of the Internship Program.

How students can prep: Create your resume, update your LinkedIn profile, and be on the lookout for more Career Services events. The Center for Career Services hosts the Career & Internship Fair every semester.

Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

You may have noticed: some additions to Marist College parking lots this semester. The College has installed its first electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in several locations across campus.

Why it matters: New EV stations are part of a series of Marist efforts that highlight the College’s commitment to sustainability and environmentally responsible operations.

The numbers: There are 16 new charging stations around campus. See the full campus map with illustrated EV charging stations noted here.

What people are saying: “We wanted to provide EV charging accessibility on campus as more people shift to transportation alternatives,” said Geoff Brackett, Executive Vice President at Marist College. “There are a growing number of electric vehicles on campus, and we want to make a resource available for students, staff, faculty and visitors who park here with a service that is cost-effective for drivers and easy to use.”

Catch me up: The Runway of Dreams student chapter at Marist recently curated and produced an Adaptive Clothing Exhibit at Marist's Steel Plant showcasing the concept of apparel that is specially designed for people with disabilities. This newly formed club is part of the national Runway of Dreams Foundation, whose mission is to empower people with disabilities though fashion inclusion.

Marist exceeded student chapter expectations: The foundation requires each college charter to produce a runway show featuring adaptive clothing, but Marist students took the idea further by creating an exhibit featuring adaptive brands such as Steve Madden, Seven7, e' Ispirante, Zappos, Mai We Care, and more. The Adaptive Exhibit went above and beyond requirements, grabbing the attention of Runway of Dreams leadership.

Runway CEO & camera crew on Marist campus: Runway of Dreams Founder Mindy Scheier journeyed to Marist campus along with a camera crew to visit and document the exhibit. On this visit, the student board for the Runway of Dreams chapter at Marist got the opportunity to present the exhibit to the national organization. The higher-ups at the Runway of Dreams were impressed with Marist’s exhibit and are planning to use it as a benchmark while they roll out this idea to their other student chapters.

Image of IDENTITY Art Exhibit

The big picture: Senior student co-curators Lindsey Centracchio ’23 and Michaela Ellison-Davidson ’23 have produced the IDENTITY exhibit at the Marist College Art Gallery in the Steel Plant for their capstone project.

All shapes, sizes, & identities: With 260 people in attendance at its opening, the exhibit was created to give senior artists from varying majors the opportunity to showcase their work, specifically artwork representing their unique identity. The diverse show featured artwork from 16 senior artists with mediums ranging from graphic design to painting to photography. During the exhibit, Ellison-Davidson held a talk on Thomas Cole about how his artistic career related to the exhibition’s theme of IDENTITY.

What the curators had to say: “We wanted to create a broad theme for the exhibition where our classmates could choose artwork they thought represented themselves as individuals and as artists,” said Ellison-Davidson. According to Centracchio, "By using this concept, the artwork demonstrates how these seniors have spent years refining their craft and are now able to produce works that express individuality in original ways.”

Showcasing our students: Producing exhibitions for the Marist Art Gallery allows art students to build their portfolios, gain teamwork skills, and experiment with new media.
