BFA in Advertising Design
Joanna graduated college on a Friday and started working full time at an ad agency the following Monday. She was lucky (and talented) enough to have garnered an internship the semester before graduation with one of her professors at a big agency in NY. Before she even received her diploma, Joanna had a full time job. That was many years ago but Joanna has that same passion for creating ads that she did on her first day of work as an assistant art director. That passion is what she instills in her students and her goal is to present her students with the same opportunities that were presented to her.
Throughout her career, Joanna has spent time at many big NY agencies, working her way up to Creative Director. Those agencies include McCann, DMB&B, JWT and GreyNY, where her leadership qualities and creativity stood out to those around her. She has created campaigns for a wide range of clients including Burger King, Hasbro Games, Panasonic and Smuckers. She is a classically trained art director and gives her students the advice to “Know A Little About A lot”. Her thinking is that the more you know, the more you can create and connect, and the better your chances of getting two old things to combine in some new way: a common definition of creativity.
As a Creative Director, Joanna mentored many junior creatives and this relationship led her to realize that she could help prepare students for a creative career in advertising. The real world experience that she brings to her students is immeasurable. Joanna’s 20 plus years in advertising gives her a depth of knowledge to pull from and relate to. She has hands on knowledge of where her students are headed, what's in store for them and can help them prepare to get there. Joanna runs her classes like she would a Creative Group in an ad agency. She shares her belief that the underlying principles of advertising will never change. The communications mediums will change and how we connect to the consumer will change but the foundation will not. No matter how you advertise your product….be it on a billboard in Times Square, or through the latest social media app or through good old fashioned radio…whatever it is, you will need to always start with an idea. It is this type of thinking that will make her students stand out from the crowd.
Joanna received a BFA in Advertising Design from FIT. She also studied Graphic Design at the London College of Communication. She has been involved in higher education since she started at the Academy of Art University in 2010 and became an integral part of their online faculty. She has mentored graduate students through their thesis helping them prepare professional portfolios and has been part of AAU’s Curriculum Leadership Team. She joined the full time faculty at Marist in 2015 and teaches Creative Advertisng courses. Joanna takes her own advice to "Know a Little About a Lot” which enables her to never stop learning as well. She looks forward to teaching her students all she knows about advertising. She lives with her husband and 3 sons in New Jersey and spends her free time at her family’s home in Vermont.
