Department of Modern Languages Welcomes New Faculty
The Department of Modern Languages & Cultures is pleased to announce the appointment of Prof. Laura Bilanceri as a Fall 2016 visiting faculty member from Istituto Lorenzo de’ Medici in Florence and Dr. Marina (Maureen) Melita as lecturer of Italian.
Prof. Bilanceri comes to Marist as part of the faculty exchange program between the College and its branch campus in Florence. She has taught Italian language courses in a wide range of countries, including Turkey, Poland, and Germany. She holds a B.A. in Portuguese and Spanish from the University of Florence and an M.A. in didactics of Italian as a second language from the University of Padua. At Marist she will teach both elementary and advanced Italian language classes.
Dr. Melita received her doctorate in Romance languages and literatures from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2016, where she also received 2 awards in undergraduate teaching. Her interests include Italian theatre and women’s literature, and she worked for 14 years as a theatre professional. She has already joined in theatre activities at Marist, adding her expertise to the “Kick-off Day” sponsored by the Marist Theatre Program and Marist College Club of Theatre Arts (MCCTA) on Sept. 10.
Dr. Melita is very happy to be at Marist and to share her passion for the language and culture of Italy with her students and the campus community alike. To that end, she and Prof. Bilanceri, along with their colleagues in Italian, are planning several upcoming events in Italian. Stay tuned for details, and please join us in welcoming these new members of our community!
