How has your time at Marist prepared you for the real world?

My primary ambition is to write fiction, so maybe I’m trying to avoid the real world for as long as possible! Marist has prepared me to chase this dream, no matter how foolish it is. Four years of studying communications have provided me with a variety of technical skills to fall back on. I can write a gripping lead, write copy, whip up a press release, and edit audio and video. These skills are a foundation, a safety net. I’ll be able to use them anywhere I go, while still trying to reach that big dream of writing fiction.

What is something that Marist has offered you that no other college could?

The combination of a thousand tiny things makes Marist unique. I loved the size of the school, the aesthetic of the campus, the degrees they offered, and so on. In the end, however, it was Marist’s sense of community that no other college could match. It’s been the friends I’ve made, the professors I’ve had, and all the memories I get to keep.

What is your biggest piece of advice for incoming freshmen?

Study abroad! Be yourself in another place, thousands of miles away from everything you know. Get lost. Don’t pack a map. Maps are boring. Meet new people, see new things. Let yourself get homesick. Miss your family, your friends, and your pet. Miss the things that are comfortable, familiar. Fight through it. Then you'll discover that home travels with you wherever you go.
