Alexis Broadnax

Alexis Broadnax is a sophomore from Little Rock, Arkansas who recently completed her first year as part of the Freshman Florence Experience (FFE) at Marist's Branch Campus in Florence, Italy. She is a digital media major with a dual minor in global studies and fashion merchandising.

What made you decide to come to Marist?
I think it was a combination of different things. I was accepted into the Honors Program, and then I was accepted into the FFE Program. I had a lot of scholarships, and then with my second visit, I realized it was my dream school and the school that was right for me.

What made you decide to do the FFE program?
It was actually a Steve Harvey video! I knew that I wanted to come to Marist, but I was still trying to decide if I wanted to do the FFE Program so early because I knew that I wanted to study abroad. I was just falling asleep on my Facebook and I saw a Steve Harvey motivational speech: “just take the leap, just jump, do it,” so then I was like yeah, I’m gonna do it. That was kind of the deciding factor.

Are you planning to study abroad again?
I want to if it works with my major. I’m taking French now because I want to learn French, so I know there’s a program in Paris for fashion merchandising, and I also know there’s one in Hong Kong too, which would be really cool.

What was the hardest thing about freshman year and how did you overcome it?
I think it was really difficult just being away from home for the first time, and being in a situation where I initially didn’t know anyone. Back at my high school, I’d been going to school with the same people, some of them since elementary school, so I think it was difficult just being in new surroundings. I think through that experience it made me more mature, and more independent, and I learned a lot about myself within that process.

What was the best thing about freshman year and the FFE Program?
Ooh, that’s hard. Probably all of the travel opportunities I got, because I didn’t realize how much I would get to travel. I ended up going to nine different countries! I remember I got to go to Morocco and camp out in the Sahara desert, and to be eighteen and to be able to do that was so cool.

What advice do you have for high school juniors and seniors considering Marist?
I would definitely say visit, and maybe do the overnight program, because that’s when I decided. Also, definitely study abroad!
